Requirements and certificate

Who needs a hot work certificate, where the requirements come from, and what the employer is responsible for.

Why a certificate?

Hot work is a common cause of fire. Insurance companies therefore require those who carry out hot work to hold a valid certificate and follow the safety regulations for hot work. Without a certificate, insurance cover may be reduced or lost if a fire occurs.

Who needs a certificate?

Everyone who carries out hot work outside permanent, approved workplaces, and those who will act as fire watch. This includes:

  • Roofers and membrane installers
  • Plumbers and ventilation fitters
  • Welders and sheet metal workers
  • Electricians and construction workers
  • Industrial and workshop employees who work with open flames, grinding or cutting

The employer's responsibility

The employer must ensure that employees have the necessary training and a valid certificate, and that certificates are renewed before they expire.

Validity and renewal

The certificate is valid for five years and must be renewed before it expires. The validity is shown on the course certificate.

Questions and answers

Does the requirement also apply to our own employees in our own buildings?

Yes, the requirements also apply when the company carries out hot work in its own buildings, outside permanent, approved workplaces.

What is a fire watch?

A person who keeps watch during and after the work and steps in if a fire starts. The fire watch must also be trained.
